Some Important History: LGBTQIA+ as an Acronym

LGBTQIA+ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, and asexual with the “+” representing other gender expressions and sexual orientations.
The acronym LGBTQIA+ has evolved to encompass the diversity of sexual orientations and gender identities within the queer community. Starting as LGB (lesbian, gay, and bisexual) in the 1990s, the acronym has added letters as terms such as transgender and queer have been reclaimed or become more mainstream.
LGBTQIA+ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, and asexual with the “+” representing other gender expressions and sexual orientations that are expanding and evolving as well. Using proper terminology can convey respect and acknowledgement to people whose identity might be marginalized.
The Human Rights Campaign describes the “+” as recognizing “the limitless sexual orientations and gender identifies within members of [the] community.” This linked glossary provides foundational knowledge for some terms and definitions.
