What is it about MAMH that makes you excited to come to work every day?
My colleagues at MAMH make coming to work a joy. I’ve worked in the nonprofit sector for the entirety of my career and with many individuals who are passionate about their work, but the team at MAMH is really a standout group.
The group comes from all reaches of the nonprofit sector, state government, and community organizations. The knowledgebase of our team is thoroughly impressive and the caliber of work each is engaged in regularly stuns me. These are supportive, thoughtful people who truly belief in the mission and vision of MAMH. I knew I lucked out very quickly after starting at MAMH almost four years ago!
Which project are you most excited about at MAMH?
I have the privilege of being a trainer for a very important and very interesting project we rolled out recently. Our Communicating for Change training examines the way we communicate about advocacy. It teaches advocates, communicators, and others to use the right language and framing to boost knowledge, shift attitudes, and build support for mental health and wellness.
In the training program we developed with the Frameworks Institute, attendees get some context on typical advocacy communications, strategies to improve their communication, and an opportunity to apply what they’ve learned to their own work. The training results in some really productive discussions, a lot of “aha” moments, and a great sense of community between people hoping to make positive change in their respective areas of work.
What's something outside of work that brings you joy and fulfillment?
My husband and I have a daughter who just turned one this fall, so most of my time outside of work is spent watching her explore the world. She’s animated and daring and very curious and it’s been the most challenging and rewarding experience learning how to be her mother.
The small bits of time I find for myself lately have been spent sewing gifts for friends and families – mainly some colorful aprons and holiday-themed table runners and cloth napkins. I’m starting in another recreational indoor volleyball league this January and my most recent half marathon was last September. I plug along at books VERY slowly – currently reading “Momfluenced,” a deep dive into the very complicated realm of social media mom influencers; “Go the Distance,” a YA novel where Megara goes on her own quest to become a God; and “A Year of Scottish Poems,” which is pretty self-explanatory.
