Board & Staff
True to its long tradition, the MAMH Board of Directors remains a diverse group representing virtually every profession in Massachusetts. The board cuts across political parties, and includes representatives from the business, government, health, finance, legal and educational professions, including family members and consumers. We have a sitting United States Congressman and two former commissioners of mental health, business and community leaders all united in the desire to promote dignity, independence and community based services for people with mental illnesses and their families.

Staff
Bernard J. Carey, Jr. Executive Director
Bernie Carey has been the Executive Director of the Massachusetts Association for Mental Health since 1975.
He has a Masters in Social Work from Simmons College and is a former Associate Professor at Boston University School of Social Work, and Visiting Adjunct Professor at the Gerontology Institute at the University of Massachusetts.
Bernie has received numerous awards and citations from human service organizations, as well as, from the Executive and Legislative Branches of the Federal and State Governments. He received the Lilo McMillan Award from the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health in recognition of his advocacy and work on behalf of people with mental illness and their families.
Timothy O'Leary, Deputy Director
Tim O'Leary, who has worked at MAMH since 1992, is a graduate of Boston College and Boston College Law School, and a former member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, where he served as Vice-Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee. He is a former Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and a former Deputy Attorney General for the State of California.
Tim is a member of the Board of Directors of Boston ASAP, an alcohol and drug treatment program and former Chair of the Board of Directors of Consumer Quality Initiatives, a non-profit organization, established and operated by people with mental illnesses. Tim has received awards from the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health, CASCAP, Inc., a community based residential service provider and the United Way in recognition of his advocacy and work on behalf of the community and people with mental illness.
